Mezőberény, Hungary
In a time when many young people spend most of their days indoors, the Green Outdoor Adventure youth exchange set out to reconnect them with movement, nature, and meaningful human interaction. The exchange brought together 36 young adults from Hungary, France, Romania, and Slovakia for a week-long outdoor experience in Mezőberény.
As the Hungarian hosting and partner organisation, Légáramlat welcomed the international group and also participated actively by sending 9 Hungarian participants and one group leader. Together with the other participants they explored nature, learned from one another, and built an international community centered on outdoor living and personal growth.
The Green Outdoor Adventure was designed with several goals in mind:
Reintroducing outdoor activities into young people’s routines, showing how movement and time in nature contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
Creating a space for cultural exchange, where participants could share traditions, discuss differences, and build friendships across borders.
Highlighting the role of nature in emotional well-being, helping participants understand how the environment supports mental health and resilience.
Ensuring a diverse and inclusive group, with all participants supported equally throughout the program.
Encouraging young people to spread the project’s message, inspiring their peers to become more active and open to intercultural experiences.
The week began with activities that helped participants settle in, build trust, and get to know one another. Through group games, creative challenges, and discussions, the young people created an atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable, respected, and ready to engage.
The following days were filled with team-oriented challenges. Outdoors, the group collaborated in parachute tasks, trust-building exercises, and a town-wide scavenger hunt that encouraged creativity and cooperation. Workshops on Erasmus+ and Youthpass broadened their understanding of opportunities for international learning and youth mobility.
Nature played a central role in the mid-week program. Participants took part in a guided hike to discover the local ecosystem, followed by a community clean-up action that allowed them to actively contribute to the improvement of Mezőberény’s surroundings. Sustainability workshops, upcycling sessions, and eco-themed creative activities encouraged participants to reconsider how everyday choices impact the environment. Together, they built artistic creations from recycled materials and designed nature-inspired vision boards reflecting their personal goals.
Sports and outdoor play added even more energy to the week. Volleyball matches, pétanque games, football, and the traditional Hungarian game Méta brought movement, teamwork, and friendly competition into the schedule. Blindfold walks and sensory exercises strengthened trust and heightened awareness of the environment.
On the final day, participants took time to reflect on their journey. Through closing workshops, they prepared their Youthpass certificates, reviewed the highlights of the exchange, and developed ideas for sharing the experience within their home communities. The farewell celebration served as a warm conclusion to a week filled with learning, laughter, and new connections.
By the end of the exchange, the young people left Mezőberény with a renewed appreciation for nature and an increased motivation to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. They strengthened important skills such as collaboration, intercultural communication, problem-solving, and self-confidence.
For Légáramlat, hosting and participating in the project showcased the power of outdoor education to unite young people and inspire them to take positive action in their own communities.
